Captain Tom’s family reportedly planned who would play them in film

Captain Tom

It’s been reported that the family of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore discussed who would play them in a film about his life.

Moore, known affectionately as Captain Tom, was a former British Army officer who came to public attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 6 of that year, during the first COVID-19 national lockdown, Moore began to walk 100 lengths of his garden in aid of NHS Charities Together.

His goal was to raise £1,000 by his 100th birthday on 30 April, however media coverage he had raised £32.79million by the end of his challenge. He received various accolades for his efforts, including a knighthood in May 2020. He passed away February 2 2021, aged 100, after being treated for pneumonia.

While Moore remained a national treasure, his family came under scrutiny for the way in which the charity that bore his name was run. Moore’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, and her husband, Colin, were trustees of the Captain Tom Foundation after his death, and it was reported in June 2022 that the Charity Commission would investigate the foundation after questions arose regarding its financial connections to members of the Ingram-Moore family.

Last year, Ingram-Moore and her husband were disqualified from serving as charity trustees for 10 and eight years respectively after an inquiry found that they were culpable of “serious and repeated” instances of “misconduct, mismanagement and failures of integrity”.

Prior to the controversy, Moore had signed a deal in 2020 to develop a biopic based on his life. Regarding who would play him, he said in a statement at the time: “I don’t know of any 100-year-old actors but I’m sure Michael Caine or Anthony Hopkins could do a wonderful job if they were prepared to age up!”

MailOnline have now reported that Moore’s family were very keen on the idea, especially the subject of who would play them. “They were always coming up with some way to make cash,” one unnamed employee revealed. “It was definitely all about how they could use this to set themselves up. That was their mindset. They were financially obsessed. They talked about a Captain Tom movie and who would play them”.

The source also recalled another film-related incident, saying: “I remember going on holiday and getting a text from Ingram-Moore asking, ‘Why aren’t we at the James Bond premiere?’ Maybe a movie will be made one day – but about what a cock-up this all was”.
