George Clooney has hit back at criticism from US President Donald Trump, over his recent successful application for French citizenship.
The Jay Kelly star, his wife Amal and their two children, were confirmed as citizens last week (December 29) according to an official decree in France’s government gazette via The Guardian.
It comes after Clooney recently told RTL radio last month: “I love the French culture, your language, even if I’m still bad at it after 400 days of courses,” before adding: “Here, they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us.”
He went on to say that although the family travels frequently, their home in France “is where we’re happiest”.
Donald Trump celebrated the news with a social media post on New Year’s Eve, writing: “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden.”
He would then list the actor’s support for his former political opponent Kamala Harris, before ending with the insult: “Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics.”
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Clooney responded: “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.” The date is a reference to the US midterm elections, in which seats in the House Of Representatives and The Senate are being contested.
In the film world, George Clooney is preparing to star in a new Ocean’s film, which is expected to begin shooting this year. He will be reuniting with co-stars Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, and Julia Roberts.
