Saltburn filmmaker Emerald Fennell’s reimagining of Emily Brontë’s classic novel comes out next month, with Robbie and Elordi as doomed lovers Catherine and Heathcliff. The first trailer for the film arrived back in September and has been skewered for everything from its anachronistic wardrobe to its overt eroticism.

What’s proven most controversial, though, has been Elordi’s casting in the film, which drew significant backlash because of Heathcliff’s ethnicity, given he is described as “dark-skinned” in the book.

Robbie leapt to his defence last year, urging fans approach the film with an open mind and saying he was “incredible” as Heathcliff. Now, the pair have spoken to Fandango about their dynamic on set in a new cast interview.

“I’m so co-dependent with people I work with, and I love everyone so much, and I’m always that person who’s so devastated when a job’s over and I never want it to end,” Robbie said. “I think I developed that quite quickly with Jacob, too.”

She then reflected on shooting alongside him, noting that he was always around, whether he needed to be or not.

“I don’t know if Emerald told you to do this or you did this,” she asked Elordi. “But I remember the first couple days on set, he would just be always in the vicinity where I was, but like in a corner, watching Cathy.”

“I didn’t tell him to do that,” Fennell then replied. “I actually had to ask him to leave.”

The Barbie star continued, explaining that she had gotten so used to Elordi’s presence, she began to look for him on set and felt “unnerved” when he wasn’t watching her.

“I felt quite lost, like a kid without their blanket or something,” she added, to which Elordi agreed, calling their relationship a “mutual obsession.”

“If you have the opportunity to share a film set with Margot Robbie,” he said, “You’re going to make sure you’re within five to ten meters at all times, watching how she drinks tea, how she eats her food … She’s just like an elite actor.”

While this has ramped up anticipation for some fans, others have expressed scepticism about the extent of their dependence on one another, and have compared it to some of the Wicked press tour’s more bizarre moments.

When asked about Elordi’s casting by British Vogue back in December, Robbie said: “I saw him play Heathcliff. And he is Heathcliff. I’d say, just wait. Trust me, you’ll be happy. It’s a character that has this lineage of other great actors who’ve played him, from Laurence Olivier to Richard Burton and Ralph Fiennes to Tom Hardy.

“To be a part of that is special. He’s incredible, and I believe in him so much. I honestly think he’s our generation’s Daniel Day-Lewis.”

Elsewhere in the Vogue piece, Fennell revealed Elordi was the reason she wanted to pursue a Wuthering Heights film. Having seen him in costume as Felix Catton in Saltburn, she said she immediately saw him in the role.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s the Heathcliff on the cover of the book that I’ve had since I was a teenager.’”

She also defended the choice to have Robbie play Cathy, who she aged up by around a decade, as opposed to the original book material, in which Cathy is in her 20s.

“Cathy is a star. She’s wilful, mean, a recreational sadist, a provocateur,” the director said. “She engages in cruelty in a way that is disturbing and fascinating. It was about finding someone who you would forgive in spite of yourself, someone who literally everyone in the world would understand why you love her.

“It’s difficult to find that supersized star power. Margot comes with big dick energy. That’s what Cathy needs.”

Back in April, Jacob Elordi revealed that he wanted to “take a break” from acting, until Fennell asked him to star in her new project.
