Night At The Museum is set to be rebooted with the film’s original director on board to produce an entirely new story.
A hit franchise for much of the last 20 years, Night At The Museum first released in 2006 and starred Ben Stiller as the security guard of a New York museum, who discovers the exhibits come to life after closing time thanks to an ancient Egyptian artefact.
A sequel, Battle Of The Smithsonian, came out in 2009, with the end of the trilogy coming with 2014’s Secret Of The Tomb. The movies have collectively grossed over $1.3Billion (around £1Billion) at the box office.
Alongside Stiller, regular cast members included Ricky Gervais as the museum’s director, and Robin Williams as an exhibit of former President Theodore Roosevelt. Secret Of The Tomb was released four months after the Williams’ death in August 2014, and is dedicated to his memory.
Now, Deadline reports that 20th Century Studios is preparing what the article describes as a “reimagining” of the franchise, with an original story featuring a new cast of characters. Screenwriter Tripper Clancy, who wrote and produced the Netflix series I Am Not OK With This, is working on a script. Shawn Levy, who directed the first three films, is involved as a producer.
Further details are under wraps for now, but it will be the first title in the franchise since Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again, an animated film which was made for Disney+ and released in 2022.
As a director, Levy is currently working on a standalone Star Wars movie, titled Starfighter, which will feature Ryan Gosling in the lead and recently cast Mia Goth as his co-star.
Original star Ben Stiller is currently working on a sequel to another of his hit franchises, returning opposite Robert De Niro and Ariana Grande in Meet The Parents 4.
