Aubrey Plaza issues first statement since “unimaginable tragedy” of husband Jeff Baena’s death

Aubrey Plaza has shared her first statement since the tragic death of her husband Jeff Baena last week.

Baena was found dead at a Los Angeles residency on Friday (January 3) at the age of 47. A cause of death has not been shared publicly, but has been ruled as suicide.

Now, in a brief joint statement (shared via Variety), Plaza, the Baena and Stern families said: “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Baena was a celebrated independent film director, best known for best known for helming films such as Life After Beth and The Little Hours, which his wife starred in. His other directing credits include Horse Girl, a 2020 psychological drama, and Spin Me Round, a 2022 dark comedy that was to be his final feature. Both films starred Alison Brie in the lead role.

Baena and Plaza started their relationship in 2011 and married quietly in 2020, before announcing it to the public the following year. They also collaborated on the 2016 comedy drama Joshy.

Baena is survived by Plaza, as well as his mother Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena, stepmother Michele Baena and his brother Brad Baena.
