The film is loosely inspired by the 1935 classic Bride Of Frankenstein, which in turn was a sequel to the 1931 big screen adaptation of Mary Shelley’s timeless 1818 gothic novel.

It shifts the events to 1930s mob crime-afflicted Chicago, with Christian Bale taking on the role of Frankenstein’s monster, who audaciously resurrects an unnamed murdered woman (Jessie Buckley), who then becomes the titular creature.

Writer and director Gyllenhaal made her name as an actor in the likes of Donnie DarkoThe Dark Knight and Crazy Heart, before transitioning to her new role behind the camera with her 2021 directorial debut The Lost Daughter

The film also stars Gyllenhaal’s parter Peter Sarsgaard as police detective Jake Wiles and her brother Jake Gyllenhaal as a Hollywood actor that Bale’s character idolises. Annette Bening and Penelope Cruz also star.

NME gave the film a four-star review, writing: “Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, who did such good work on Joker, delivers a raucous score while three-time Oscar-winner Sandy Powell has a ball with the costumes – led by Ida’s distinct orange dress. While the Bride’s relationship with Frank isn’t exactly a tear-jerker, Gyllenhaal has made something unique and singular. An outlier in the Frankenstein canon, it’s both a thought-provoking re-assessment of Shelley’s work and a bonkers feminist call-to-arms. They don’t come much wilder and weirder.”

Christian Bale recently told NME that his performance in the film was inspired by Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious and Manic Street Preachers’ Richey Edwards.

The film features a memorable original score from the celebrated Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, known for scoring JokerTár and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, as well as her earlier work with her compatriot, Jóhann Jóhannsson.

The film also includes sly references to horror classics, including a snippet of Irving Berlin’s ‘Puttin’ On The Ritz’ in homage to Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, and Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers’ ‘Monster Mash’.

There are also classic standards performed by Jake Gyllenhaal in the film, as well as new songs from Fever Ray, in the form of ‘The Lake’ and ‘Wrong Flower’. Karin Dreijer of Fever Ray also cameos as a singer in the film.
