The acclaimed director is a huge video game fan. In 2014, he teamed up with Hideo Kojima for P.T., a playable teaser for a cancelled Silent Hill game, and has regularly spoken about how influential games are in his work. However, he said in 2021 that he doesn’t think he’ll work on another game after a second project he was involved with (Insane, from the team behind Saints Row) was also cancelled. “I’m the albatross of video gaming”.

In a new interview with IGN, Guillermo Del Toro has spoken about some of his favourite games.

“I love Left 4 Dead, Death Stranding made me cry, Shadow Of The Colossus made me introspective about so many intangible things. BioShock is a world I could get lost in for ages. Dead Cells was really interesting to me – I just hate respawning. There are 35 levels and you have to start over again. Please do a version without respawning for the elderly players,” he asked game developers Motion Twin. “Journey is amazing. Monument Valley… these are worlds that I love.”

“And then every day of my life, every moment I have free, I play Angry Birds,” he added. “I’m really good at it.”

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast last year, Del Toro praised  the God Of War games as “some of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had.”

“You know when he fights Odin and Odin keeps coming back and he looks like a Peaky Blinders brawler and he beats the crap out of Kratos… what a great video game,” he added. “The way they use the budget of data on the console to create atmospheric dispersion and light… it’s like a film.”

Earlier this year, Angry Birds was added to the World Video Game Hall Of Fame alongside the original Silent Hill, FIFA International Soccer and Dragon Quest.

In other news, The Simpsons is returning to Fortnite later today (July 30) as part of the new Reload season, alongside a John Wick crossover.
