Jason Schwartzman is set to return with his first new music as Coconut Records in 13 years.
The US actor and musician, who has starred in numerous Wes Anderson films, released two studio albums under the moniker: ‘Nighttiming’ (2007) and ‘Davy’ (2009). Schwartzman’s indie solo project also provided the score for the 2012 comedy-drama film Goats.
Last month, Schwartzman’s friend and collaborator Ben Kweller confirmed that Coconut Records had contributed to a track called ‘Depression’ on his upcoming new record ‘Cover The Mirrors’.
Schwartzman then launched an official Coconut Records profile on TikTok, where he has shared a series of videos soundtracked by some of his old tunes. The first clip was accompanied by the hashtags “#coconutrecords #jasonschwartzman #benkweller #nostalgiacore”.
The next video showed Schwartzman and Kweller “writing [a] new Coconut Records on FaceTime”, with the caption including the hashtags “#newalbum, #newmusic and #songwritingprocess”.

A later upload, captioned ‘public service announcement’, showed a still image of the pair together in the studio.
“Me and my friend Ben are writing and recording and we learned that if we get 1,000 followers we will be able to go live on TikTok so please tell your friends so we can turn on the camz when we make the jamz,” an onscreen message read.
In the most recent clip, Schwartzman is seen at work recording a keyboard part. You can check out the videos here:

Schwartzman previously played drums in the LA band Phantom Planet, who are best known for their 2002 track ‘California’. The song was the theme song for the hit US TV series The O.C..
In 2003, Schwartzman departed the group to focus on his acting career. Phantom Planet then ended their hiatus in 2019, when they played their first live shows together in seven years. Schwartzman did not rejoin the line-up.
That same year, the band released their first new song in over a decade with ‘Balisong’ before following it up with the track ‘Party Animal’. In 2020, Phantom Planet dropped their fifth and latest album ‘Devastator’ – their first full-length effort in 12 years.
Schwartzman has worked with Phoenix too on their 2015 cover of ‘Alone On Christmas Day’, which also features Bill Murray.
His most recent film credits include Megalopolis, Queer, Pavements and the Pamela Anderson-starring The Last Showgirl – the latter of which was produced by his brother, Robert Schwartzman.
