Macaulay Culkin says he hasn’t spoken to his father in 30 years

Macaulay Culkin

Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin revealed in a podcast that he hasn’t spoken to his father in over three decades.

At the age of 15, Macaulay petitioned a court to remove his father Kit Culkin and mother Patricia Brentrup as his legal guardians, blocking them from his $40million trust fund. The trust was then managed by his family’s accountant until he was 18.

Having remained out of the spotlight for much of his teens and early adulthood, Culkin has emerged recently as podcaster and online presence, reprising his role as Kevin Macallister in an advert for Google.

He has also embraced his past with various viral videos nodding to his child fame, as well as returning to acting with a role in 2019 film Changeland, TV show American Horror Story: Double Feature, and the forthcoming second season of Fallout. He grew up with six siblings, including newly-crowned Oscar winner Kieran Culkin.

In past interviews, he has described his father as abusive, which led to his separation as a teen.

Appearing on the Sibling Revelry podcast with Oliver and Kate Hudson, the actor said of his father: “I haven’t spoken to him in about 30-something years. He deserves it too. Yeah. He’s a man who, he had seven kids, and now he has four grandkids. Yeah. And, none of them want anything to do with him”.

He also claimed he felt Kit didn’t believe he had done anything wrong. “I have more than an inkling that he does not feel that way. Like, we’re wrong, and he’s right,” he said. “He’s one of those kind of like narcissistic, crazy people”.

Now 44, Culkin is a father himself to sons Dakota and Carson, whom he shares with his wife Brenda Song. He shared that his relationship with Kit shaped how he wanted to be as a parent. “One of my earliest memories of him was (thinking), ‘When I grew up, this is how I’m not gonna be with my kids,’” he said.

“Now that I have kids of my own, it’s like, you know, it kicks up some dust. I kinda go, you know, like, I can’t believe he was like that”.

Recently, he talked about how he got emotional watching brother Kieran win Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars.
