The first live-action The Legend Of Zelda movie was announced in November 2023, following the success of the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film will be directed by Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Wes Ball and star Bo Bragason (Princess Zelda) and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Link).

The project is currently filming in New Zealand and in November, Nintendo shared a handful of first-look images from the movie.

Nintendo hasn’t revealed much else about the project but The Legend Of Zelda’s IMDb page was recently updated, claiming that John Paesano would be composing the film’s soundtrack with Koji Kondo acting as consultant. Kondo has been involved in the franchise since the original 1986 The Legend Of Zelda and also worked on the recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Meanwhile John Paesano previously worked with The Legend Of Zelda director Wes Ball on 2024’s Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes and The Maze Runner Trilogy. Paesano won a BAFTA for his Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales score and has also contributed to Gran Turismo 7, Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

The Legend Of Zelda movie is due to hit cinemas in May 2027.

It’s also been reported that Nintendo could be gearing up to release a remastered version of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time as well as a brand new Star Fox adventure later this year. However, the same report claims that Nintendo fans will be waiting until 2027 for a brand new 3D Mario title.

Last week, Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto shut down rumours of a Super Smash Bros.-inspired crossover movie after Star Fox’s Fox McCloud played a pivotal role in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Following the success of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the tech giant was “building a framework” for future movie adaptations and wanted a “consistent release” of blockbusters. As well as the live-action The Legend Of Zelda film and a rumoured third Super Mario Movie, there are reports Donkey Kong is set to get his own spin-off flick.

In other news, The Pokémon Company has confirmed a trio of immersive Pokopia experiences for London, Berlin and Paris.
