Pete Chiarelli (The Proposal) has been tapped to pen a new instalment of the female-fronted action and adventure franchise for the studio, per The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s currently unclear who is producing the new version, although one source told the publication that Drew Barrymore and her Flower Films banner are back for this new version.

The original Charlie’s Angels aired on ABC from 1976 to 1981, and the crime drama quickly became a pop culture sensation, as well as launching the careers of its leads Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Farrah Fawcett.

Decades later, the title was thrust back into the spotlight when Sony’s Columbia brought it to the big screen in 2000. That version starred Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, and proved a massive hit at the box office.

Both the 2000 version and the subsequent 2003 sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, earned over $250million (£196millon) at the worldwide box office, while the most recent Kristen Stewart-starring 2019 reboot fizzled out with just $73million (£57.35million).

In 2022, the director of the latter told The New York Times that she wished the film’s marketing “had not been presented as just for girls,” which she cited as one possible reason for the movie flopping.

Stewart later said that she “hated” making the Elizabeth Banks-directed reboot, telling Variety: “It was a good idea at the time. I hated making that movie. I don’t know what else to say to you. Honestly, the three… you can’t touch [that]. Cameron, Lucy and Drew… I love that movie. I love that movie! If that says anything.”

In NME’s three-star review of the film, we called it “breezy, frivolous entertainment” with a plot that sometimes “falls flat”.
