A number of notable names were left out of this year’s In Memoriam segment at the Oscars
As per tradition, last night’s (March 15) Academy Awards paid tribute to those in the film industry who have passed away in the past 12 months.
Starting with a moving tribute to Rob Reiner by Billy Crystal, who was later joined by a number of other stars who worked with the late director over the years, there were also standalone tributes to Robert Redford by Barbra Streisand, Diane Keaton and Catherine O’Hara by Rachel McAdams.
The segment also included the traditional montage of many other names who had died, including Robert Duvall, Val Kilmer, Claudia Cardinale, Terence Stamp, Graham Greene and Tom Stoppard.
However, among those omitted were Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek and Euphoria‘s Eric Dane, who both died last month, as well as French film icon Brigitte Bardot, who passed away in December. Also not included were Harold And Maude‘s Bud Cort and Hindi film icon Dharmendra.
No reason has been confirmed for their omissions.
Meanwhile, One Battle After Another was the big winner at last night’s ceremony, winning a total of six gongs including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson, Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, as well as the inaugural Best Casting prize for Cassandra Kulukundis.
Sinners went into the night with 16 nominations, winning four including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, and a historic Best Cinematography trophy for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who became the first woman and first woman of colour to win the award.
The other acting prizes went to Jessie Buckley for Hamnet (Best Actress) and Amy Madigan for Weapons (Best Supporting Actress).
Frankenstein took three technical awards, while KPop Demon Hunters was victorious in the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song categories – though its victory for the latter saw the winners controversially cut off mid-speeches.
Elsewhere, the cast of Bridesmaids reunited on stage, while host Conan O’Brien took aim at Timothée Chalamet’s recent opera and ballet comments controversy. Javier Bardem and Jimmy Kimmel also made digs at Donald Trump while presenting awards.
