Gaming fans have been paying tribute to acting great Patrick Stewart, who has died at the age of 86.

The beloved actor, known for his roles in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises, passed away on Wednesday (October 28) at his home in Los Angeles. His family disclosed in an Instagram post shared on Thursday (October 29) that he had undergone “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia”.

Stewart’s remarkable career stretched out over nearly 70 years, and included extensive stage work as well as many high-profile film and TV assignments. He also featured in well over two dozen video games, many associated with Star Trek and X-Men, but others on a more ad hoc basis.

Among his video game appearances being remembered by fans are his dual role as Zobek/Death in 2010’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and its 2014 sequel, and his role as Emperor Uriel Septim VII in 2006’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Journalist Stu Smith shared a revealing story from Stewart’s stint on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

“Bethesda, the game’s developer, sent Stewart nearly a hundred pages of lore about their world and the motivations of his character, a Marcus Aurelius-like emperor contemplating his life and fearful of the coming darkness threatening his empire,” Smith recalled. “Worried they had scared Stewart off the project with so much material for a character who dies almost immediately, Bethesda reached out to check in on him.”

“Instead, they discovered that Stewart was absolutely delighted,” Stewart added. “He told them it was actually the best character preparation he had ever received in his entire acting career.”

Meanwhile, acting colleagues including Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, William Shatner, George Takei and Rebecca Romijn are also paying tribute to Stewart, who was knighted in 2010 for services to drama.

He is survived by family including his wife Sunny, whom he married in 2013, and two children. On Instagram, his family requested that “in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources”.
