After the woodland shootout, Jayson (Sam Keeley) and Perry (Jamie McShane) are hiding out together, albeit under tense circumstances. The leaders of the Dark Hearts want Jayson dead after he started the shootout, despite being ordered to stand down. In a phone call with the gang’s leader, Perry is told to kill Jayson if he doesn’t want to be hunted down.

Perry prepares to kill him, grabbing a knife, but he’s unable to go through with it. However, this choice backfires when Jayson later discovers that Perry killed his lover Eryn (Margarita Levieva). Jayson stabs him to death, but in a last act of loyalty, Perry warns Jayson that the Dark Hearts are heading to the hideout.

After the pair previously deduced Robbie’s (Tom Pelphrey) drug money had to be at Maeve’s (Emilia Jones) house, Jayson heads that way through the woods, escaping the pursuing gang members. At Maeve’s house, Jayson holds her at gunpoint and finds the money, but his plan is interrupted by FBI agents Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) and Aleah Clinton (Thuso Mbedu).

Jayson, with Maeve still at gunpoint, goes to escape with the money in a car outside her house, but he’s shot dead by an injured Grasso (Fabiel Frankel), who was hiding out in the backseat of the car.

What happens to Grasso?

Anthony Grasso, who has been working as an informant for the Dark Hearts to earn money for his family, tells his sister he’s going to turn himself in – to rid himself of the guilt he’s been feeling since he inadvertently caused the death of Lizzie Stover (Alison Oliver).

Grasso, however, is attacked by fellow informant Mike (Raphael Sbarge) and a Dark Hearts gang member at his home. In the shootout, Mike is killed and Grasso is badly wounded from a gunshot. He manages to flee the scene, but instead of going to the hospital, he drives to Maeve’s home to warn her that the Dark Hearts are coming to find the money.

As Maeve is held at gunpoint by Jayson, Grasso is given a morsel of redemption for his past actions as he fires the gunshot which saves her.

We last see Grasso recovering in hospital from his injuries, where he asks his boss Tom, a former Catholic priest, if he’s going to give him “penance” for betraying the task force. “I never gave penance,” Tom replies. ‘People beat themselves up enough on their own.”

What happens to Maeve?

After Jayson is shot dead, Tom doesn’t report the stolen drug money housed at Maeve’s home. This harkens back to episode five, where Robbie asks Tom to help Maeve so she’s not “punished for my f**kups”, a promise he fulfills in this last act.

As such, Maeve takes the cash and uses it to start a new life with Robbie’s young children. In the last scene, they’re all seen driving off in a car away from Philadelphia.

What happens to Tom and Sam?

After the incident with Maeve and Jayson, Tom continues to look after young Sam (Ben Doherty) as they await news of a suitable foster parent. Tom, inevitably, gets attached to Sam during those weeks, so when a family emerges who wants to adopt him, he’s hesitant to let him go.

However, he’s encouraged by his priest friend Daniel (Isaach De Bankolé) to “be unselfish with your love” and let Sam grow up in surroundings which are best for him. “What’s best for you might not be best for the boy,” Daniel tells Tom. Sam is later seen being picked up by another family, with Tom agreeing to let him go.

Elsewhere, in an emotional courtoom scene, Tom forgives his mentally ill adopted son Ethan (Andrew Russel), who killed his wife Susan (Mireille Enos). While he doesn’t have Sam, he has learnt to forgive and move on within his own family, alongside his biological daughter Sara (Phoebe Fox) and adoptive daughter Emily (Silvia Dionicio).
