Damien Leone has overseen the low-budget horror films since their debut in 2016, with the first Terrifier being made with a budget of just $35,000 (£26,000). Since then, they have built a cult following, with the second film arriving in 2022, and the third earning a huge $90million (£69million) at the global box office in 2024.
The films follow Sienna Shaw, a young woman destined to defeat the enigmatic Art The Clown, a demonic serial killer that inhabits the fictitious Miles County, New York.
Leone is currently working on the screenplay of Terrifier 4, and in a recent post on Facebook, he has indicated that the film will mark the “finale” of the franchise.
“The script is very close to completion, and I’m hoping to begin pre-production this spring,” he revealed. “This is the most precious script I’ve written for many reasons, but it’s also the most challenging. There’s a lot of material to tackle and a lot riding on this one, not just creatively but emotionally.”
“We’ve built something special together over the years. The cast and crew who have been here since the beginning deserve a finale that honors their dedication, and the fans who’ve championed this franchise deserve something unforgettable.”
He continued: “In all honesty, I’m thrilled with the way it’s turning out and confident it will deliver. I will officially announce when the script is complete on my social media pages which also means we’ll be moving into pre-production. If you don’t see it coming from or confirmed by me, then it’s not official.”
“Thank you for your patience. I promise it will be worth the wait!”
Last summer, Leone teased that the fourth film would explore Art The Clown’s origin story in a “Lynchian” way.
“I could never be on the same level as David Lynch. He’s one of my heroes. But I love the way he tells stories, and they’re very abstract. He doesn’t give you answers. If he ever tried to articulate, it would trivialize and diminish the beauty of what he’s done as an artist.”
