The biggest animated film ever is coming to UK cinemas soon

Ne Zha 2

Ne Zha 2, the biggest animated film of all time, is set to get a UK cinema release.

The Chinese film was released in its homeland in January, and has broken a slew of records since, notably becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever after surpassing last year’s Inside Out 2.

Ne Zha 2 is also now the highest-grossing film of all time in China and the biggest in a single market, the first non-English language film to gross $1billion (£700million), as well as the highest-grossing non-English language film ever. It also currently stands as the sixth highest-grossing film in history.

It has now been confirmed that the film will be released in the UK later in March, according to Deadline, with other European territories likely to get a release too.

The film landed in the US last month, and has so far made just over $19million (£14.6million) across the pond.

Ne Zha 2 comes from director Jiaozi and follows on from the 2019 first film. Based on Chinese mythology, the film follows a boy with magical powers who battles demons.

The movie has become a huge phenomenon in its native country, with fans recently coming out online against its box office competitor Captain America: Brave New World, which stars Anthony Mackie as he takes on the mantle of the titular superhero.

Many took to social media recently to disparage the Marvel sequel, with a reported popular slogan reading: “I don’t care if Ne Zha 2 can survive overseas, but Captain America 4 must die in China.”

“It’s not Captain America that’s dying, but America that’s dying”, one post read. “In reality, the US does not have superheroes and the US is not a peace-loving, peace-defending beacon for humanity.”

The new Captain America film has taken a total of $370million (£286million) globally so far, and $176million (£136million) in the US.
