The Sunderland artist shared a Soundcloud link to his reworking of the album on his social media on Wednesday morning (January 1), alongside a video of him performing the track ‘Arizona’ solo on acoustic guitar.

“Every year I reinterpret one of my favourite albums,” Smith wrote in the post. “This year I chose Midas by Wunderhorse.”

Smith’s whole reinterpretation of ‘Midas’ can be found here.

The record is Newquay indie band Wunderhorse’s second studio album – the follow-up to 2022’s ‘Cub’ – and was released in August via Communion Group. It was produced by Craig Silvey (The Rolling Stones) and reached Number Six on the UK Albums Chart.

In a four-star review of the album, NME said: “Though it’s meant to be a second album, ‘Midas’ feels like a fresh start for a group that, through becoming a proper team, has found its way. It may only be a second album, but it looks like the business of Wunderhorse is set to continue to prosper.”

Smith, meanwhile, suffered a blow just before Christmas when four of his band’s guitars, as well as pedals, a laptop, a live amp and essential medication, were stolen from their van at a service station.

They were en route to London to play a live session on Radio X with John Kennedy on December 20 when the crime occurred, with Smith saying he was “absolutely devastated”, noting that one of the guitars was gifted to him by his grandad six years ago.

Smith’s father later set up a GoFundMe campaign to attempt to raise money to replace the gear, which surpassed its £8,000 target. From 394 donations at the time of writing, the campaign has so far raised over £12,000. You can see the page here.

Smith is set to hit the road later this month on a co-headline tour with Girlband!. They kick off in York’s The Fulford Arms on January 23, before heading to Huddersfield, Lancaster, Hull, Brighton, Southampton and Birkenhead, before wrapping in Norwich Art Centre on February 7.
