Tom Holland has said some of his previous projects haven’t been easy to promote, admitting he’s secretly thought some were “shit” while doing press.

The British actor is currently promoting both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which are out within weeks of each other, with the latter hitting cinemas in the UK on Wednesday (July 29).
On a recent appearance on an episode of the Dish Podcast, Holland spoke with hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett about the nature of press cycles, touching on the need to occasionally talk up a project, regardless of his feelings on it.
“I’m absolutely loving it. When you’re doing press for movies you’re really proud of, it’s really easy,” he said. “Because when they ask you questions about why should people go and watch this movie, you’re not lying to anyone. You really feel like people should go see it.
“I’ve had experiences before when people say, ‘Why should you see this movie?’ And in the back of your mind, you’re like, ‘You shouldn’t, because it’s shit.’”
With two major blockbusters out this summer, Holland described his current run of projects as “a bit of a victory lap”, saying: “I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m super proud of both of the films.”
Elsewhere on his press run, Holland revealed that his next project would be a biopic of Fred Astaire, telling Good Morning America he would be doing all the dancing required himself.
Considered one of the biggest stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood and its greatest dancer, Astaire rose to fame in the 1930s with classics like Top Hat and Holiday Inn. The film, directed by Paul King (Paddington, Wonka), is currently in pre-production, and during the interview Holland detailed his preparation.
“We have Fred Astaire next, which is what we’re planning on doing. As soon as I finish these tours I’m diving back into the dance studio,” he explained. “I did my first few rehearsals recently, and it both filled me with excitement and absolute dread because I’ve got so much work to do to try and do Fred proud.”
Holland comes from a dancing background, having achieved his big break as the star of the Billy Elliot stage show. Outlining his ambition for the dance scenes, he insisted he wanted to do everything himself. “I have a desire to use no doubles,” he said. “To do all of the dancing, to shoot those dances in one shot – how [Astaire] would have done it.”
Holland is currently enjoying the success of The Odyssey, which achieved the biggest opening of 2026 for a live-action film, and received a warm reception from Greek audiences according to a new report.
