The solo artist and former One Direction member died on October 16 following a fatal fall from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Argentine prosecutor’s office has revealed that the 31-year-old’s cause of death was due to multiple traumas and internal and external bleeding.
Prior to his death, Payne and Cassidy were in Argentina on holiday, where they had also watched Payne’s One Direction bandmate Niall Horan‘s concert. Before Payne’s death, Cassidy returned home as she had “responsibilities” to take care of.

Now, Cassidy has opened up about the singer’s tragic death in her first interview since Payne’s fatal fall. Speaking to The Sun, Cassidy has revealed that Payne was in “such a good headspace” when she left Argentina but that “you never know when [his addiction] is gonna come out.”
She explained why she had to leave Argentina: “Originally, we thought we were only going to be in Argentina for about a week… We had a responsibility. We had our dog, and obviously I never would have thought this event would have occurred. I never would have thought that this would have happened. I never would have thought that it would ever turn out the way it did.”
Reflecting on her choice to return to Miami despite Payne wanting to extend their trip, she told the publication: “If I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina.”

Payne had been vocal about his struggles with mental health in the past. On that topic, Cassidy said: “I stuck with Liam through, you know, thick and thin. And I think love is so optimistic, and you just hope that… everything at the end will work out.”
Back in late October, a close friend of Cassidy’s said that her decision to leave Payne in Argentina two days prior to his tragic death has tormented her. “She did what she needed to do at the time. She had no idea what was going to happen. I can tell you that her decision will haunt her for the rest of her life,” the source said.
Cassidy previously paid tribute to her boyfriend in an Instagram story in which she wrote: “Thank you for all of the kind words and love that has been sent my way. I have been at a complete loss. Nothing about the past few days have felt real. I ask and pray that you’ll give me the grace and space to navigate this in private.”

She ended her message by sharing: “Liam, my angel. You are everything. I want you to know I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you Liam.”
It comes following reports that the remaining members of One Direction may reunite in tribute to Liam Payne at this year’s BRIT Awards.
Last month, a hearing at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court confirmed that Payne’s death was the result of “polytrauma”, which refers to multiple traumatic injuries sustained by a body’s organ systems.
Elsewhere, Payne’s friend Roger Nores recently filed a federal defamation lawsuit against the late star’s father for defamation. Nores is one of five people who have been charged in Argentina over the death alongside CasaSur Palermo hotel manager Gilda Martin, reception head Esteban Grassi, Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz.
