The show is a TV adaptation of the hit 2005 film of the same name, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The first season introduced Erskine and Glover as strangers who are hired as spies, posing as a married couple to carry out various missions for an anonymous superior. As they navigate the pressures of espionage, they also develop feelings for each other.
The season featured a different mission each episode, and had Alexander Skarsgård, Sarah Paulson, and Michaela Coel among the guest stars. It was a critical success and received 16 Emmy nominations, of which they won two.
The first season ended over two years ago, but now a follow-up is in production. According to Deadline, production has started in Los Angeles County, with both stars reprising their roles. Mark Eydelshteyn (Anora), and Talia Ryder (Never Rarely Sometimes Always), have been cast as a rival spy couple, assuming the ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ code name given to all operatives.
A release date has not been confirmed for the new season, with Anna Ouyang Moench, who worked on the shows Beef and Severance, taking over as showrunner.
The show has a long production history dating back to the early 2020s, where it was originally meant to star Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The Fleabag star left the production in 2021, citing creative differences, and talked about why she left two years later.
She told Vanity Fair: “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it – still care about it.” She added: “And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision.”
