Disney+’s adaptation of Hideo Kojima‘s critically acclaimed video game franchise Death Stranding was officially announced just under a year ago (November 2025). It’s being directed by Takayuki Sano, with Kojima executive producing, and will premiere sometime in 2027.

The series will tell a completely new story, separate from that of the video games, and will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure. It also promises to introduce all-new characters into the Death Stranding universe.

Alongside the trailer, Kokima Productions has released a more detailed plot synopsis for the series. It teases: “The story is set in North America immediately after Sam – the protagonist of the game – reconnects the continent by means of the Chiral Network. However, as America is reborn from the ashes, the renewed connections that bind it together bring about new and unforeseen consequences.

The synopsis continues: “In this tumultuous new landscape, there are some who walk a different path to the one chosen by Sam and his Bridges comrades: a wise old man who connects people through a method that defies all reckoning; a female soldier ensnared in a cycle of war and destruction; a boy who seethes with rage at the absurdity of his life… and of course, the girl who chose to sever all ties with the outside world… Fate has other plans for her, however, and chance encounters see her launched headfirst into a world she does not recognise.”

In addition to the animated series, a Death Stranding live-action movie is in the works at hip indie production house A24. Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One) is set to direct it.

Kojima has previously confirmed that even though he won’t be directing the movie, he will still be involved. “I made Death Stranding as a game, so in order to turn it into a movie, it’ll be something totally different. But it’s my baby, so I would like to overlook the project,” he said.

“I’m teaming up with A24 and Michael Sarnoski, so he will be writing and directing. I’ll let them work on it without too much of my input, because that might get in their way. I don’t want to go in and ask them to make a bunch of changes; that’s not cool. I have to trust these people, and I trust A24 and Michael.”
